Soon....for reference, the motor on the right is going on a 15 pound biplane, where it's predicted to put out on the order of 3.35 horsepower.

Was building a quadcopter last spring, the brushless motors i was working with were alot smaller but damn did they terrify me when I got the props spinning

Did you get the power projection from the 2700W input *0,93 efficiency * 1,34 for horsepower conversion? :)

This is fairly interesting to me, as I was looking at some motors designed for electric bikes, and they're more along the lines of 250-500-1000W, I believe. As for price, this BigFoot160 seems to go for around 55$ on sale or 90$ regular price, which is still cheaper than the bike motors. Sure, those come in a hub, ready to go, but still...

I've done kart builds with R/C airplane motors for power. You can get a surprising amount of power out of them. I do know that a lot of people use them in ebike builds. If you haven't already, you should check out the endless sphere forums.

No, I used a calculator online called ecalc. It does more than just power estimation and takes battery and prop size into account. For my planned setup it's predicting right around 2500 watts

I've got 4 electric airplanes now, but even then this guy is a bit intimidating, in every way. 18 inch prop, 37 volts at 80 amps, 2.5 kW of power....safety will be paramount.

Well, thanks kinja...

Here's the plane it's going on with a gas motor, next to another one of my planes, the Believable Hulk

Those are cool invisible planes.

I feel kinja has got the better of you today.

That's awesome. You should put a purple accent on the Believable Hulk somewhere to represent the shorts.

Gotta love brushless outrunners. What voltage are you planning to run it at?

10S1P, so 37 volts

Gotcha, that's one big LiPo pack.

Post a picture when done, this sounds killer.

SAE Aero Design competition, by chance? We don't have it at my school, have always been curious about what all it entails.

No, just for fun.

Some people I knew did sae aero design while I was in school, but it was internal combustion at the time. I did AIAA design build fly which was a whole other animal.

As I recall, aero design is all about designing a plane that fits a certain set of dimensions and carrying as much weight as possible. In that case power to weight doesn't need to be nearly as extreme as my sport planes, this motor could probably lift 30-40 pounds with the right design.
